Al-Qarnqao’a is a social tradition that is beloved by both children and adults, and it is celebrated by the people of Qatar. It takes place in the middle of the month of Ramadan. In some areas, children celebrate it in the afternoon, while in others, it is celebrated after sunset. People prepare for this event by purchasing sweets and nuts of various types, and mothers either buy special bags for this occasion or sew them themselves.
During the middle of Ramadan, children gather in every neighborhood (“Fereej”) and walk through the area singing songs in front of houses or in the house’s courtyard. They mention the names of the children in the household within their songs, wishing them long lives. In return, the housewives offer them sweets and nuts to delight them.
This occasion fosters social interaction between children and, in a broader sense, between children and their families. This interaction helps children develop social behaviors that contribute to shaping their personalities.
