The Majlis plays a vital and central role in the social structure of Qatari society. It has significant implications on the moral and social levels, regulating and organizing the general behavior of individuals within the community. It also strengthens the bonds of cohesion and solidarity among people. Through the social norms governing relationships, the Majlis has played a leadership role, positioning itself as a guardian of the community’s relations. Both the young and the old adhere to the “Sana’a al-Majlis” (the etiquette of the Majlis), which serves as a communication hub and a platform for sharing cultural traditions.
As a result of the customs and traditions that govern the relationships of tribe members or the “Fereej” (neighborhood), the Majlis has evolved into a specific architectural pattern with a designated place in the spatial organization of the tribe. This positioning is aligned with its essential role in supporting the leadership of the tribal chief. Thus, the Majlis becomes an obligatory architectural element in the social sphere, one that cannot be overlooked when planning modern Majlises.
