The Arabian horse is considered one of the oldest, noblest, and most beautiful horses in the world. It is mentioned several times in the Quran, which elevates its status above other animals. The Arabian horse is classified into various types, with over twenty distinct breeds, including the Kuhaylan, Hamdani, Abayan, and Sahlawi, among others.
Interest in horses in Qatar began in the early 20th century, with the establishment of stables dedicated to breeding these remarkable animals. According to the Gulf Guide, a respected historical encyclopedia, the Qataris have long maintained a rich heritage of Arabian horse breeds. In the early 1900s, there were 150 horses in Doha alone, with forty horses in Al-Wusayl and Al-Fuwairit. The guide also notes that certain areas in old Doha, such as “Rawdat al-Khayl,” were named after the horses.

Today, Qatar is home to several renowned stables, such as Al Shaqab, one of the world’s leading stables, alongside other distinguished facilities like Umm Qarn, Abu Fes, and Al Shahania stables. These institutions continue to uphold and celebrate the heritage of the Arabian horse, contributing to Qatar’s international reputation in equestrian excellence.
