Hunting with the Saluki is considered one of the traditional practices in Arab and local culture, as it is closely linked to falconry, known as saqara. The people of Qatar have long been interested in breeding the Saluki hunting dog due to its distinctive qualities, skills, and abilities in hunting. They have bred and cared for it, developing its instincts and individual capabilities. The Saluki is known for its loyalty, devotion to its owner, remarkable patience, and sharp intelligence, which has deepened the attachment of the people of Qatar to it, making it an essential part of hunting and falconry heritage. Arabs have recognized its qualities and nature for centuries and have carefully bred and developed its abilities.

We continue to preserve this cultural heritage because it encourages future generations to learn and practice the ancestral art of hunting with Salukis and to take pride in it as an important aspect of their national heritage. Therefore, we support all local and international efforts to successfully register and preserve this rare intangible heritage unique to the Arabian Peninsula’s inhabitants.
The Falconers Association works to revive this ancient Arab tradition by offering care and attention to Salukis and their owners who are members of the association.

The Saluki, a noble and self-respecting animal, is named after the region of “Saluq” in Yemen, with its lineage extending to Mesopotamia. This breed of dog belongs to the same family as “sighthounds,” dogs that rely primarily on sight in hunting.
