Palm fronds or wicker craft is one of the traditional crafts known in Qatar and other parts of the Arab world. This craft is based on the use of palm fronds to make handicraft products that are used in daily uses and are found in almost all Qatari homes. The products of palm fronds/wicker are varied and include: “Al-Mahfa”, a hand fan, “Al-Makba”, to cover food from insects or dust, “Al-Mishb”, to light a fire, “Al-Qillah”, to store dates, “Al-Manz”, a small child’s bed, “Al-Hasir”, the square we use to sit on, “Al-Jafir”, a basket to carry materials, and “Al-Sufra”, a circular tablecloth that is considered a place to eat. The wicker craft relies on manual skill, and is a craft usually performed by Qatari women. It also relies on natural colors to dye the fronds. In order for it to continue, the local community has established a center – Qudrat Center for Development – to support this craft, provide craftswomen with support and market their productions.
