Al-Samari is a type of folk singing that originates from the maritime heritage of Qatar and the Gulf countries. The name “Samari” comes from the Arabic word “samar,” which means to engage in evening social gatherings or conversations, reflecting the sense of companionship. This is what Qatari pearl divers would chant during their nights at sea.

The origins of Al-Samari are traced back to the Qassim region in Saudi Arabia, from where it spread to areas like Ha’il, Wadi ad-Dawasir, Bisha, Samari Al-‘Arid, and southern Riyadh. Al-Samari is considered one of the most popular folk genres, attracting many enthusiasts and followers. It differs from other folk music styles in Qatar and the surrounding countries in its rhythm and performance, maintaining a strong cultural identity rooted in the region’s maritime past.
