The Al-Batulah is a traditional face covering worn by Qatari women at all times, whether at home or outside, to protect their faces from exposure. It is a veil with two openings for the eyes or slightly longer, reaching down to the chin or slightly beyond. The Al-Batulah is an iconic feature of Qatari dress but has declined in usage after the 1950s. The name “Al-Batulah” reflects its unique nature as a garment worn by Qatari women from puberty until death. It also serves to protect the skin from harsh weather conditions. The Al-Batulah is made from a sturdy fabric known as “Shil,” available in three colors: red, yellow, and green. Its design is tailored to the woman’s face shape and age. The use of the Al-Batulah extended beyond Qatar to other Gulf countries as well.
