Al-Naqdah is one of the oldest traditional crafts in Qatar and the Gulf region. It involves embroidering local women’s clothing, typically made from lightweight fabrics such as Tulle, “Weil,” or silk, with golden and silver threads. The embroidery adds a fine artistic and decorative touch to the garments. A special needle called “Al-Naqda needle” is used for embroidery with floral and geometric patterns, traditionally known for its fine craftsmanship. However, with the advent of modern sewing machines and automated embroidery, this craft is at risk of fading away. In response, the Ministry of Culture established the Qudarat project in 2000 to preserve the art of Al-Naqda by providing training sessions for young women and transferring knowledge from older artisans to younger generations.
